Bangalore, India (Metro Rail Today): The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Urja completed drilling of 855 meters for phase 2 of Bangalore metro from Cantonment station to Shivajinagar station. The milestone achieved on September 22, 2021 at 10:15 AM.

The TBM Urja deputed by Larsen and Toubro is the first machine to complete drilling in the city’s longest underground Bangalore Metro route from Kalenga Agrahara to Nagawara.

BMRCL said,

After completing 855 meters of tunnelling, Tunnel Boring Machine Urja achieved a breakthrough at the North end of Shivajinagar station on September 22. Nine TBMs have been deputed to complete the drilling of the corridor.

Anjum Parvez ( BMRCL Managing Director) said,

Rocks posed a hurdle during the drilling operation. However, the machine continued to drill through safely. On average, 3.5 km were covered per day. On some days, even half a kilometer was difficult to drill due to rocks.

The underground route is a part of the new line from Kalenga Agrahara to Nagawara proposed in Phase 2 of the metro project.  It consists of 7.5 km of an elevated corridor and 13.76 km of an underground corridor. The corridor has 18 stations and almost 22 km of tunnels. The name of the stations are Kalenga Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIMB, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital, Tavarekere, Dairy Circle, Lakkasandra, Langford Town, National Military School, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Shivaji Nagar, Cantonment, Pottery Town, Tannery Road, Venkateshpura, Kadugundanahalli and Nagawara.

The route of the underground corridor has been divided into four sections. TBM Urja will also be tunnelling a route from the Cantonment station to the New Pottery Town station. This line, which will run through the heart of the city, will ensure complete metro connectivity to the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru after its completion.
